Individually Assigning Materials

Educators can individually assign Materials to students or grading groups within their Schoology Course(s). For step-by-step instructions, please follow the directions below. Please note that if you are using linked Sections, there is another step you will need to take to ensure the assignment only shows up in the Gradebook for the students you assign it to.

For more information on creating Grading Groups, please click this link: SAU19 Knowledge Base - Adding a Grading Group to Assign Materials to Groups of Students.

Individually Assigning Materials in Non-Linked Sections

1. Click into a Schoology Course.

2. On the Materials tab, click Add Material and select Add Assignment.

3. Enter the assignment information including:

   a. Name: Enter a name for the assignment

   b. Description: Enter a description so students and parents understand what to do with the assignment (this is important and it will pass to PowerTeacher Pro)

   c. Points: Enter the number of points the assignment is worth (if none, enter 0)

   d. Category: Assign a category (if not graded then leave it as ungraded)

   e. Syncing: If you are syncing the assignment to PowerTeacher Pro, leave this checked. If you are not, uncheck this box.

   f.  Options: Click the word bubble icon to Disable Comments (it will now be grayed out).

   g.  Options: Click the 3 colored dots to individually assign the material. A new text field will load, labeled Assign to.

   h. Click in the Assign to field and start typing the name of a student or grading group. A drop-down of your students or grading groups will auto populate. When it does, click on the student or grading group you want. If you are assigning to more than one student or grading group, just click into the box again and add additional students or groups.

   i. Once it has been individually assigned, added a Due Date. Click the lock icon to add a date to lock the assignment, which will remove it from the students To Do/Overdue list in Schoology. The click Create.

You have now individually assigned the material to the selected student(s) or grading group(s).

Individually Assigning Materials in Linked Sections

If you have linked Sections, you will need to complete the steps above and then also complete the following steps:

1. Click on Gradebook from the left side bar.

2. Click the 3 dots in the upper right-hand side of the Gradebook and select Bulk Edit from the drop-down menu.

3. Locate the assignment you individually assigned.

4. Leave the Section with individually assigned students or grading groups as Published (green circle). Click the green circle for the Sections that do not have students or grading groups you assigned it to (the circle will turn white, and the assignment will be unpublished for those Sections).

Please Note: Sections are not labeled in the Bulk Edit screen, but they are listed in the order they appear in the Schoology Gradebook. If you added a Due Date to the assignments it will be listed next to the Section that it has been individually assigned for. The blank Due Date is the Sections you can unpublish.

5. Click Save Changes to save any changes you made.
