Using the Format Painter

Use Format Painter to quickly apply the same formatting, such as color, font style and size, or border style, to multiple pieces of text or graphics. With format painter, you can copy all of the formatting from one object and apply it to another one (copying and pasting for formatting). To use the Format Painter, please follow these instructions:

1. Click the formatted cell or highlight the text or graphic that has the formatting you want to copy.

2. On the Home tab, select the Format Painter icon (paintbrush). The cursor will change to a plus sign and a paintbrush icon.

3. Use the brush to paint over a selection of a cell, text, or graphics to apply the formatting. This only works once.

To change the format of multiple selections in your document, you must first double-click Format Painter. Then you can paint multiple areas to apply the formatting. To stop the multiple formatting, press ESC.

Please Note: Only highlight specific cells for Format Painting. If you highlight a number row or a lettered column, it will try to apply the format to every cell in that column or row, regardless of whether it contains data or not.
