Collected Only Assignments Versus Collected Exception Code

Teachers have two collected markings in Schoology, and each serve a different purpose. Collected Only Assignments are meant to identify whether an assignment has been collected or not but will not be accompanied by a score. The Collected Exception Code is a place holder to identify that a student has turned in the assignment (taking it off their to-do list) while providing the teacher time to grade the assignment. Once a score has been added, the Collected Exception Flag will be automatically removed. Please follow the directions below to use Collected Only Assignments and/or the Collected Exception Code.

Collected Only Assignment
1. Log into Schoology and go into the Course you want to create a Collected Only Assignment in.

2. Click Add Materials and select Add Assignment.

3. Add a Title and Description and then check the box for Collected (indicating you will only be marking the assignment as Collected but not scoring it. Ignore the points field and then select the Category.

4. Add a Due Date (customize for each Section, if desired - for linked Courses). Click the word bubble icon to disable commenting. Then click Create.

You have now created a Collected Only Assignment

5. When you are ready to grade the assignment, go into the Schoology Gradebook and hover over the grade cell for the student you want to mark as Collected and click the flag icon.

6. Select Collected from the pop-up menu.

The assignment will now be marked as Collected. No score will be able to be entered.

Please Note: Collected Only Assignments are only meant to be checked or not checked. Do not mark the assignment with the Missing Exception Code. Doing so will calculate a score of 0% in Schoology (unless this setting was disabled in your Schoology Gradebook for all assignments at the beginning of the year). When the grade syncs to PowerTeacher Pro, it will only sync the Collected flag due to the intended nature of this type of assignment. This will cause a grade discrepancy between the two gradebooks. If the assignment is missing, just do not check it off and add "Missing" in the comment box.

Collected Exception Code
1. Create an assignment as you normally would.

2. Once ready to grade the assignment, enter the Schoology Gradebook, hover over the grade cell for the student you want to give the Collected Exception Code for, and click the flag icon.

3. Select Collected from the pop-up menu.

The Collected Exception Code will now appear for that student and the assignment will show as turned in.

4. Once you are ready to grade the assignment, enter a score into the grade cell for that student. The Collected Exception Code will automatically be removed.

Please Note:  The Missing Exception Code can be used for this type of assignment since it is scored.
